Many people visit Mt Rainier every year and there is something here for everyone. It became a national park in 1899, before the National Park Service was even created. Mt Rainier has the most glaciers out of any peak in the contiguous United States. Another name for Mt Rainier is Tacoma, as this was one of the names given to the mountain by the native people that originally lived here. It is stratovolcano that can be seen from Seattle, WA on clear days. Mount Rainier is 14,410 feet tall and is the tallest mountain of the Cascade Range. There is something here for everyone, whether you are searching for waterfalls, mountain views, or wildlife. Even though Mt Rainier seems like just one mountain, there are so many amazing things to see here. It blew our expectations out of the water. During snow plowing operations or when otherwise posted, park roads are closed to all use, including hiking, skiing, snowmobiles, and bicycling.Mt Rainier National Park is absolutely gorgeous. CHECK SIGNS on closed road gates before proceeding. NOTE: Closed roads may be open to non-motorized vehicles like bicycles. This requirement applies to all vehicles (including four-wheel drive), regardless of tire type or weather conditions. NOTE: All vehicles are required to carry tire chains when traveling in the park during the winter season (Nov 1 - May 1). Longmire-to-Paradise Winter Road Opening Decision Matrix Visitors are also advised that Westside Road is an active geohazard zone. Hikers and bicyclists should travel through the area with caution and avoid lingering in the hazard zone. NOTE: Due to danger from rock fall, vehicles must park south of the barricade at Dry Creek. Currently there are no restrictions for unmodified motor coaches of standard length. NOTE: Due to the steep, narrow, and winding nature of the Sunrise Road, it is recommended that RVs and vehicles with trailers longer than 25 feet LOA not travel up the Sunrise Road beyond the White River Campground intersection. Check the Stevens Canyon Road Rehabilitation Project page for additional information. During closure, the road is closed to ALL use, including hiking and bicycling. The middle portion of the road closes for construction at 6:00 am on Mondays and remains closed through 8:30 pm on Fridays. Expect minor delays due to one-lane traffic when open and rough road conditions. The middle portion of Stevens Canyon Road from Stevens Creek to Grove of the Patriarchs is OPEN with weekend & holiday access ONLY due to construction for the 2023 season. OPEN from Paradise Road wye on the west side to Stevens Creek, with access to Reflection Lakes and Bench & Snow Lake Trailhead. The Eastside and Silver Falls Trails are open. NOTE: The Grove of the Patriarchs vault toilets are open but the Grove of the Patriarchs trail remains closed. OPEN from Stevens Canyon Entrance on the east side to the Grove of the Patriarchs parking area. One-way scenic route leaving Paradise connecting to Stevens Canyon Road. NOTE: Most of this road is gravel and some sections have rough conditions with potholes.
